The flag on the gunboat passsing right to left was in fact a standard Union Flag, but the Japanese 'Sun' emblem was carefully painted onto the flag frame by frame, except for one (possibly left by West as a 'joke') which shows the Union Flag clearly. Clipped frames showing Japanese 'Sun' ensign

This was in fact a promotional model named 'King Edward VII' which was pulled around London on a trolley in the early 1900's as an advertising device for the 'Our Navy' films.
